New ebookreaders hit the market frequently, and more and more authors and publishers are using ebooks to reach readers.

Boyd County Public Library is committing about 20 percent of its materials budget to the purchase of ebooks and downloadable audiobooks.

We purchase them from a few different providers. First, there’s OverDrive, which is the ebook provider for Kentucky Libraries Unbound, a consortium of libraries in the Commonwealth which BCPL joined in 2006. Through OverDrive, BCPL patrons currently have access to more than 12,000 ebooks and 10,000 downloadable audiobooks.

Earlier this year, we added Freading to our digital book offering. The Freading collection includes more than 20,000 titles, with about 600 new ones added each month. A nice thing about Freading is the multiple copies, so there is generally no waiting, even for new releases.

OneClickdigital is the library’s audiobook provider, which gives our patrons access to about 4,000 always available audiobook titles published by Recorded Books.

Links for all of these services can easily be found on this web site. All you need is your library card.

Believe it or not, electronic books are more than 60 years old. Well, sort of. The first thing resembling an electronic book dates to the late 1940s, when Roberto Busa published a heavily annotated electronic index to the works of Thomas Aquinas. But the general consensus is that Michael Hart invented the first true ebook when he typed the Declaration of Independence into a computer in 1971.

Those first ebooks were generally written for specialty areas and had a limited audience – technical manuals for hardware and manufacturing techniques, to name a couple of the early subjects.

Sony introduced the first electronic book reader in 1992 – the Data Discman – that could read ebooks that were stored in CDs. But soon, the Internet exploded, which made transferring electronic fil

es, including ebooks, much easier.

Libraries in this country started offering free ebooks to the public in the late 1990s, but their offerings were still mainly scholarly. In 2003, libraries began adding popular fiction and non-fiction to their downloadable choices. By 2010, more than two-thirds of U.S. public libraries were offering ebooks.

So what does all this mean for BCPL card holders? It means that our customers can “check out” an ebook for free, just as they would a print copy. Digital checkouts are automatically returned to the digital catalog, so there are never any late fees.

With all of our downloading services, you can transfer the item to a computer, smartphone or any reading device. Instructions are available at each branch and online, and staff can answer any questions.

As technology advances – by the second, it seems – we see changes that make ebook downloading easier. For example, just last month, Barnes & Noble added the OverDrive Media Console app to its Nook Apps storefront. This means those who read on any of the Nook devices can now wirelessly borrow ebooks and MP3 audiobooks from the library – instead of having to sideload the files from a computer.

OneClickdigital, the audiobook supplier, announced a similar upgrade last month for the Kindle Fire. It already offers apps for the iPhone and all Android devices.

You don’t have a way to read ebooks, or aren’t interested in downloading yourself? No problem. At BCPL, you can check out a Nook, complete with a selection of books. All you have to do is pick the genre you like.

There’s no way we can know what’s coming next. But we are definitely excited to find out, and we will be ready to bring it to you.

OverDrive App Comes to Nook

 

Borrowing eBooks and audiobooks from the library just got a whole lot easier for users of the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet™ and NOOK Color™. Last week, Barnes & Noble added the OverDrive Media Console app to the NOOK Apps™ storefront. This NOOK app enables users to wirelessly borrow eBooks and MP3 audiobooks from the library.

 

All NOOK devices, including NOOK 1st Edition, NOOK Simple Touch and NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight, have always enabled users to read eBooks borrowed from libraries and schoNook colorols, but the process required sideloading the files from a computer using Adobe Digital Editions and a USB cable. Now users of NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet and NOOK Color can borrow eBooks and audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive app.

 

Users can visit the NOOK Appsstorefront to install the free OverDrive Media Console (OMC) app. The app enables users to locate a library or school nearby, browse or search their eBook and MP3 audiobook collection and, after entering a valid library card or school ID,  check out and download the title for a lending period of one to three weeks (depending on the library or school’s policies). At the end of the lending period, the title simply expires.

 

The version of OMC available in the NOOK Apps storefront is OMC for Android v2.5, so any instructions found on library Help pages related to OMC for Android will apply to the NOOK app. While the app is free, users will need a valid NOOK account in order to download the app.

Adobe Releases Digital Editions 2.0

Adobe has officially released Digital Editions 2.0, which comes with several improvements and changes.

 

 What’s new

  • The UI has been completely redesigned to be screen-reader friendly. It’s compatible with NVDA, JAWS andVoiceOver for low-vision and visually impaired users.
  • The software now presents eBooks as a simple tile or list item. The hover-over context menus are gone. To bring up a context menu, right-click on a cover image. This helps with screen reader usability.
  • Activating compatible eBook readers has improved significantly. Simply plug in an eBook reader, open Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), then drag a library title over to the device. The software automatically registers and authorizes your device with your computer’s Adobe ID.
  • Adobe has updated the install page. When you click theDownload now link to the right, you’ll be taken to a page that offers two installers (Windows and Mac). The Flash-based installer is gone. Now, you download a DMG or EXE file and install the program. This is much more common behavior when installing applications from the Internet.

A quirk you should know about

This is brand-new software, so there may be a few bugs. If you find one, please let Adobe know so they can work on fixing it.

With that said, there’s one inconsistency that you should be aware of: Loanperiod banners are not always accurate. For example, a brand-new three-week loan may show up as a two-week loan. Loans still expire at the appropriate time. It’s just the banner that is off. We’ve already let Adobe know about the issue.

The Library would like to announce the addition of two new services – Freegal Music and Freading (ebooks).

Freegal Music is an online database that provides access to songs from Sony Music. The music files are DRM-free and do not expire, and are compatible with PCs, Macs, iPods, iPads, smartphones and other MP3-compatible devices.

The Freegal Music Service will allow the Boyd County Public Library to increase the size and diversity of our collection by offering access to over 10,000 music labels from 65 different countries.

Boyd County Public Library cardholders are eligible for three MP3 downloads per week.  A library card number and PIN is necessary to access and download songs.

Our eBook collection is growing thanks to over 20,000 titles that are always available 24/7 with your Boyd County Public Library card and Freading. That’s right – no waiting lists, no overdue fees! Check out titles for 2 weeks with an additional 2 week renewal period if needed using your Freading tokens.At the beginning of each week, you are given 4 tokens, which can be used to download Freading eBooks. Each eBook costs 1, 2, or 4 tokens depending on the release date of the title.

  • Four tokens – titles less than 6 months old
  • Two tokens – titles 7 months to 2 years old
  • One token – titles older than 2 years

Unused tokens roll over to the next week, but all tokens reset to 4 again every four weeks.

    Sadly, unlike a regular person, a library cannot pay Amazon or Barnes & Noble for an eBook and then lend it out to people.  We can buy a printed book from these companies, place it on the shelf, and lend it out–but digital content is being treated differently by the publishers and the companies who manage digital content licensing.  We very much want to offer these eBooks to patrons; however, the publishers’ policies are preventing us from doing so.Think that’s wrong? So do we – Boyd County Public Library is committed to advocating for a change to these restrictive policies and we need your help to do that.
