No matter what your literary taste, Boyd County Public Library probably has a book club to match it. We’ve made a few changes to our book clubs in 2013, trying to respond to what patrons have requested. The clubs meet every month, except December, and titles are provided at least a month in advance. The library and the BCPL Friends help all regular members obtain copies of each book to be discussed.

For more information, call Amanda Clark at 606.329.0518, ext. 1140.

(You will notice that most of the clubs are discussing “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London at their meetings in March. That’s because the novella published in 1903 is the selection for The Big Read, sponsored by the Paramount Arts Center, BCPL and other local groups. You will hear more about that in the upcoming weeks!)

The Main Branch in Ashland is home to four clubs. The one we simply call The Main Book Club meets on the last Tuesday at 6 p.m. Upcoming selections include: “The Three Musketeers” on Jan. 29, “The Man Who Was Thursday” on Feb. 26, and “The Call of the Wild” on March 26.

Novel-Tea is another group that meets at Main, on the last Monday at 1 p.m. As the name implies, the group discusses books over a cup of tea – and perhaps some biscotti. The group will be reading and discussing the following this winter: “Girl Child” on Jan. 28; “The Old Romantic” on Feb. 25, and “The Call of the Wild” on March 25.

If you are into graphic novels, then we have a group you’ll enjoy. Let’s Get Graphic! is the name of that club, which also meets at the Main Branch. The group’s meeting day has changed in 2013 – to the third Thursday at 6 p.m. On Jan. 24, the group will discuss “All Star Western Volume 1: Guns and Gotham,” followed by “Animal Man Volume 1: The Hunt” on Feb. 21, and “Swamp Thing Volume 1: Raise Them Bones” on March 21.

One of our newer book clubs is for fans of the horror genre. Last Writes started last fall, at the Kyova Branch, but we have moved it to the Main Branch this year. It’s easy to remember the day – the last Thursday (Last Writes on the last Thursday) at 6 p.m. On Jan. 31, the group will discuss “The Found,” followed by “Wait Till Helen Comes” on Feb. 28, and “44” on March 28. For more information that group, please call Jan Ratliff at 606.329.0090.

We no longer have the Kreative Kritics book club at Kyova.

The book club at the Catlettsburg Branch has been on a hiatus during the branch remodeling project, but will resume when the branch reopens, which is expected to be in early February. The group meets on the second Tuesday at 5 p.m. In February, members will discuss reading selections for the rest of the year, and at the March 12 meeting, the group will discuss “The Call of the Wild,” as part of The Big Read.

If you can’t make it to a meeting, then check out our online offering through Dear Reader. There are a huge selection of genres you can chose from. Readers receive a “daily dose of a book” in their email account. By the end of the week, if they like the book, they can link to the library’s website and reserve a copy.
