genealogy room at the Main Branch recently underwent a major transformation.
The new location, in what used to be the art gallery on the second
floor, includes more square footage, more shelving, improved lighting
and a dedicated microfilm reading room.
The renovations
are part of our ongoing Project:

History at The Library
The
Minnie Crawford Winder Room is staffed the same hours as the rest
of the library and has a genealogical assistant on duty to help
researchers.

8 p.m. Monday through Thursday
- 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. Friday and Saturday
- 1 p.m. to
5 p.m. Sunday
EXCEPTIONS are
holidays and possible weekend closings. We STRONGLY suggest that
you CALL AHEAD prior to a weekend visit as the room will be closed

research. We request a $6.00 donation per individual request. This
donation will include xerox copies if material is located and postage.

Our Special
Collections include the Arnold Hanners Tri-State Photograph Collection,
Boyd County Historical Records Collection, Hilton Collection, Ky
Vital Records 1911-1995, Locality Vertical Files, Surname Vertical
Files, Armco Photograph Collection, and Early Furnace Records.
Our microfilm
collection includes a variety of early Boyd, Carter, Greenup and
Lawrence County newspaper issues including the Ashland Daily, Carter
County Heritage, Carter County News, Carter County Herald, The Central
Methodist, Olive Hill Dispatch, Olive Hill Herald. The Ashland Daily
Paper is complete from 1922 to present.
The microfilm
census collection includes all Kentucky Federal Census. We also
have slave and agriculture census for Kentucky. We have PA census
complete to 1850. VA 1820-1870 and WV 1870-1900. Our Ohio census
is by selected southern counties 1810-1920.
The microfilm
collection also contains the World War II
Draft Cards for Boyd and Carter County, Kentucky, Ashland Council
Minutes, and Geiger diaries. Early court orders, marriage, deeds,
tax, vital stats are available for selected eastern Kentucky counties
including Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Lawerence, Johnson, Floyd and Pike.
Computer stations
are available in the room. The cd genealogy collection is growing
every day. It now includes Native American information including
Dawes Roll indices. Patrons may utilize our internet connections
for genealogy sites.
The book collection
includes many family histories, state and county sources, military
histories, cemetery records, city directories, area school yearbooks
and immigration and passenger lists. Check the
card catalog.
The
genealogy staff provides interlibrary loan service from the Ohio
HistoricalSociety, AGLL, Virginia State Library and TN State Archives.
Please ask the staff about specifics and costs of film rental.
The Eastern
Kentucky Genealogical Society publishes the TREE SHAKER quarterly.
The annual fee is $10 which entitles members to free queries about
their eastern Kentucky ancestors. Back issues of the TREE SHAKER
are also available [$10.00 per year per 4 issues]. For information
