Library Commons opens
BCPL works with city on outdoor area

commonsThe library and the city of Ashland officially invited the public to start enjoying the Library Commons, a new area linking the library with Central Park.

The Library Commons, with its paved paths, benches, trees, landscaping and a large fountain perfect for cooling off on hot summer days, connects the Reading Garden at the library’s Main Branch on Central Avenue to the neighboring park, used by thousands of people each day.

Mayor Steve Gilmore said he was glad to see the opening day finally come, for a project that was first discussed many years ago.

commons“This is a wonderful addition to the city, and for library users. It will bring a lot more people into the library, to enjoy the many things going on there.”

Library Director Debbie Cosper said BCPL was thrilled to be a part of the Library Commons project, which she called a great extension of the library’s Reading Garden. “We have been waiting for this day,” Cosper said. “It is a beautiful way for library patrons to get to the park, and for people to visit the library.”

commonsThe Reading Garden opened in the spring of 2006. At slightly under 2,000 square feet, the garden’s benches, swings, sculptures, bistro tables and eight-foot water wall make it a nice place to sit outside and eat lunch, read, or use the library’s wireless access to get some work done.

There is also a Children’s Grotto with long benches and a stool for story telling.

Sweetbay Landscaping was the architect for both projects.
