Warm weather is finally here and summer will arrive in just a few short weeks! After the long and cold winter we experienced, I can almost feel warmth coming from the letters of the word s-u-m-m-e-r.

This is the time of the year we throw open the windows to get fresh air and start enjoying outdoor activities once again. Also, we make our annual migration outside to survey our yard and landscaping needs. At my house we are no different. This year, as my family planned outdoor projects, I realized how much useful information we gather from the library, and that is what sparked the idea for this column.

After several years my wife has finally worn me down and we are now getting a pool. What I didn’t know when I agreed to this was how many types of pools there were and how many decisions would need to be made; above ground pool, in ground pool, concrete, fiberglass, steel, resin, freshwater, saltwater, WOW! Not to mention the building codes and all the different approvals needed from utility companies to identify a safe place to construct the pool. We were pretty overwhelmed, and then we turned to the resources at the library. We found helpful information in the news and articles section of the on-line database “Consumer Reports” on topics like pool safety and keeping peace with your neighbors. We also checked out different books to get ideas of what the different types of pools looked like and the pros and cons of each type to help make our final decision. I am happy to say that we have made a decision that we’re comfortable with, and the feeling of being overwhelmed is gone and construction should start in a few weeks!

Moving beyond pools, the library has a vast selection of items to get you through the summer; tips on grilling or barbecuing the perfect ribs, gardening, fishing, hiking, boating, improving your golf game, camping and much-much more. Checkout a book on tennis techniques (and a tennis racket, too) and finally beat your friend at tennis this summer. Maybe you just want a book to read in a nice shady spot or on a sandy beach. You name it, we’ve got it!

Since summer is also vacation season, don’t forget that you can take BCPL Mobile with you no matter your destination. You can stream music and movies, read your favorite e-Book, or just relax while listening to an audiobook. Search your favorite app store for BCPL Mobile and download the Boyd County Public Library app to your mobile device.

No matter what your outdoor activity is this summer, BCPL has plenty of resources and items for checkout that can help you make this summer great. So come on in and see how we can help you with your summer projects and activities. BCPL wants to help you enjoy your summer months as much as possible!
