Go back to school with us!
We are happy at BCPL to help make the transition from the swimming pool to the classroom a bit easier.
First, plan to come to our 6th annual Ice Cream Sundae, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. We will have Storyteller Stephen Hollan, face painting, and of course, ice cream. Kids and parents can tour the newly remodeled Youth Services Department at Main, and enter for a chance to win a backpack full of school supplies (one each for elementary, middle and high school.)
If you already have a library card, fantastic! And if you don’t, then the Ice Cream Sundae is the perfect opportunity to get one. It’s easy to sign up – all you need is a photo ID and proof of address. A parent or guardian needs to sign for anyone under 18 years old.
Your BCPL card can be your most valuable school supply – it unlocks a world of books, movies and music you can check out for free, as well as access to our public computers (including wireless internet) and a slew of great databases and free download services.
One of our main electronic services for students is Tutor.com, which offers Homework Help daily from 2 to 11 p.m. (including weekends)!
Library card holders from elementary school through college can get on-demand help from qualified tutors by simply going to the BCPL website: www.thebookplace.org.
From there, just click on the Tutor.com button, enter your library card number, and you’re in. Select your grade level and the subject you need help in, and you will be quickly connected with an expert tutor for one-on-one help in elementary math and science, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, American history, world history, political science, spelling, grammar, essay writing and book reports. Spanish-speaking tutors are also available.
Forget about pencil and paper. The many features of Tutor.com make is possible to get more done in less time than ever before. You can:
- Upload a problem to the interactive whiteboard and solve it together with your tutor.
- Share documents and proofread your essays in real time.
- Use the shared web browser to find authoritative resources.
- Save time with the built-in library of equations and formulas – just drag and drop them onto the whiteboard.
Each tutoring session is archived, so you can review or replay it later. You can also save files to your “locker” to work on them later, or talk to your tutor with voice chat.
Tutor.com is also the only online, on demand tutoring service that allows students to connect to a tutor from any device in its HTML5 classroom. Students who use an iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad can download the Tutor.com To Go mobile app.
