Tax rate decreases

August 31, 2012 by

good news

by BCPL Director Debbie Cosper I am happy to report some good news: Boyd County residents will see a reduction this year in the amount of real and personal property tax they pay to support Boyd County Public Library. Now, I know words like “tax rate” and “budget” usually make people’s eyes glaze over,  but I think it’s important to explain to the taxpayers how their funds are being used to support their library. Let’s start with the tax rate. … Continue reading

storytime @ your library

At the Library, we are huge believers in the importance of developing reading skills in children, at an early an age as possible. The more children read – or are read to – the better readers they will become. Plain and simple. That’s why BCPL places such an emphasis on early reading programs. We offer a  Toddler Time program at all three branches, and a Preschool Story Time at both Main and Kyova. And now we’re trying to make it … Continue reading

First, plan to come to our 6th annual Ice Cream Sundae, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. We will … Continue reading

Of the thousands of students throughout the region getting ready to go back to school this month (or are already back), more than 1,000 of them are better prepared for the upcoming academic year because of the time they spent reading with us this summer. A total of 897 kids (12 and under) and 138 teens took part in Boyd County Public Library’s summer reading program. Studies show that kids who read at least a few books in the summer … Continue reading

Article on “Libraries and e-books”

July 31, 2012 by

This is an interesting article on ebook use.  Yes, BCPL offers ebooks (46,000 of them) and, yes, there are often long wait times.  But we are working to alleviate that by committing 11% of the materials budget to this format.  Do you read e-books from the library?  Why or why not?  We’d like to hear your comments on this subject. Visit Kentucky Libraries Unbound (Overdrive). Libraries and e-books “Does your local library offer e-books for loan? It might. But if you aren’t sure, you … Continue reading
