The Baz Luhrmann Effect

May 26, 2012 by

Last weekend I found myself couch-bound and down with a serious sickness.  In times like these, I look to my favorite dvd’s to help me pull through.  Fueled by antibiotics and nostalgia, I put in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet.  This movie is in my all time Top 10, maybe Top 5.  That’s how much I LOVE IT!  The soundtrack is tops too. Can you believe how young they were??  Leo and Claire?  I forgot how pretty he was.  The … Continue reading

The Devil Inside

This movie stars Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Suzan Crowley and Evan Helmuth and is directed by William Brent Bell.  A young woman becomes involved in unauthorized exorcisms in an attempt to understand the events surrounding her mother’s incarceration after she murdered three people who were attempting to exorcise a demon from her.  It is filmed documentary style like Paranormal Entity and the Paranormal Activity series.  I am interested in hearing your opinion concerning the ending.  I really liked it but my 16-year old … Continue reading

The Ledge

The Ledge begins with a young man, Gavin (Charlie Hunnam), walking out onto the ledge of a building.  Detective Lucetti (Terrence Howard) shows up to talk him down.  We learn that Detective Lucetti brings his own personal problems to work with him on this day.  Gavin tells the detective his story.  He still has time.  He isn’t jumping until noon.  We learn how he fell in love with Shana (Liv Tyler) who is unfortunately married to Joe (Patrick Wilson).  Their … Continue reading

The Hunger Games

Everyone knows about this movie. Almost everyone has read the books, and everyone who has LOVES THEM! We’re invested in them. The movie is still in theaters. If you’re waiting for the dvd, there is no official release date, but it’s expected to be in August. And you know the Boyd Co. Public Library will have several copies on pre-order. This review is spoiler heavy, so read at your own risk. First things first, what matters most is whether or … Continue reading

Another Earth

April 5, 2012 by

This is a 2011 movie about a parallel Earth that appears in the sky one night. It’s explained by orbits behind the sun.  The movie never actually goes to the other Earth so that’s a bit disappointing.  It’s mostly a story about the decisions and mistakes we make in life. We follow the life of a young woman who is living with the consequences of her actions. The ending isn’t very exciting but I enjoyed it because they don’t just … Continue reading

Immortals

immortals dvd

I watched The Immortals for the first time with my husband on DVD the other evening; neither of us were terribly impressed.  The film started out slow and did eventually move into some action packed fighting.  However, the kicker for me was the inaccuracy of the film with regards to its mythological foundation. The premise is Theseus is a bastard, born to his mother after she was raped in a small Grecian village.  Unbeknownst to Theseus, his friend and mentor is actual Zeus (leader of the Gods) in … Continue reading
