Toolbars

Lately, as I’ve been roaming the system, I’m finding a lot of toolbars installed on staff computers. The library does not support toolbars on staff computers unless specifically requested and approved. Toolbars use system resources, collect user data, and generally (to IT staff) indicate that someone has been given installation rights and isn’t taking the responsibility seriously enough to pay attention during the installation of software. the last one is the important one.

Catlettsburg Computer Update

Catlettsburg equipment was shipped and tracked to the Canadian/US border but there have been no reports from the trucker since. Everything could show up at any time but just in case (and because we’re so far behind) I’ve had them order another server in to be staged Monday and overnighted to Catlettsburg for Tuesday delivery. We’re shooting to have things up and running Wednesday or Thursday.

The vendor supplying the equipment for Catlettsburg is supposed to get back to me today about why we haven’t received anything. First it was a problem with new HP contracts and now it’s a problem with the shipper. Hopefully, we’ll have good news when they get into their offices on the west coast later today.

Staff wireless network

We’ve been using a wireless VLAN for staff that was protected by a shared passphrase; this VLAN (Library Staff) will be going away within the week. It’s replacement VLAN (Staff) is already in place and everyone should be switching to it for the additional security. The Staff VLAN does not use a passphrase. Instead it uses your Active Directory (AD) credentials which are the same login and password you use to log onto one of the library computers. If you plan on using a wireless device in the library, need to have it on the secured VLAN, and don’t have an AD account contact me and I’ll create one for you. DO NOT use a public computer account (acirc, chstaff, etc…) to log onto the wireless network.

Avatars (and Profile info)

When we upgraded some of the backend systems getting the new website up we also upgraded the WordPress version we were running on and ran into a problem with avatars. The plugin we were using for avatars wasn’t compatible with the new version of WordPress. We just deactivated the old plugin and replaced it so you should be able to change your avatars now. In fact your old avatar might have been removed in the process.

While you’re at it, add other information to your profile like your first and last name. That way we don’t have to figure out who left a comment…Debbie

A lot of the blogs that we do are really time specific and don’t need to be filling our site database up past a certain point. If you’re posting something that doesn’t need to be archived please use the post expiration date option which has been added to the sidebar on the right towards the bottom of the page when you’re making a blog entry.

If you’re one of the people who puts images into the slideshow on the homepage please be sure to size the image correctly. Before uploading them to the site be sure they’re sized to 600px wide by 286px high.

Website Re-Design

Sometime after 9 of the clock this evening our website will begin transitioning to its new design. Colors and content have stayed the same but navigation has changed a lot making it easier to find what you’re looking for on the site. Enjoy looking around the site tomorrow. A site maintenance page will be up directing patrons to http://polaris.thebookplace.org for access to Polaris while the changes are being made.

What the website needs????

We’re going to take Mike’s departure as an opportunity to take another look at the website. Now, remembering that we don’t have his programming skills available now, what are some little things that need to be improved on the site. Examples: Amanda G. had a newsletter sign up form that wasn’t getting the email addresses to her. It was also brought up that the “Any Field” box on the frontpage search form might make more sense to people if it was after the “Find books, music, etc…” box. Are you having problems uploading pictures, or do you need to create picture galleries? Please EMAIL suggestions to me. Some might get taken care of soon, while other may need to wait until we get someone to take over the site but I’d like to keep the project active, useful to staff and patrons, and have things lined up when we have a site developer available.
