“We took our spinning wheel and lots of great prizes to the midnight premier of The Hunger Games movie at Kyova 10 Theater. Anyone who showed us a library card got to spin for a chance to win books from the popular series by Suzanne Collins, the movie soundtrack or some great BCPL stuff. And if they didn’t have a card, we signed them up for one! Let the Games begin!!! Then, in August, we hosted a premier party for the DVD release of “The Hunger Games,” complete with trivia, costume contest and archery (poor teddy bear), followed by a screening of the movie.”

Nightscapes Photo Exhibit

“The library’s first-ever photo exhibit, called “Nightscapes,” runs Aug. 3 through Sept.4 at the Highlands Museum & Discovery Center, 1620 Winchester Ave. Forty photographers submitted their favorite original night scene – there are some really great shots! The opening reception is at 6 p.m. Friday. Aug. 3 (admission to the museum is free on First Friday). Regular museum admission prices apply during the rest of the exhibit period. “Nightscapes” is a part of “Between the Covers,” the adult summer reading program at BCPL which runs through Labor Day. A Best of Show award (and $50 prize) will be given at the Readers’ Night Out summer reading finale party on Sept. 7.”

Featured Resources and New Materials

On the homepage, there is now a section highlighting our resources/databases at random. Sometime next week, I hope to have more department specific featured resources sections on each department page. For example, the Youth Services main page will show a few childrens databases at random. This is only to try to bring more exposure to our databases.

There is now a new materials link in the main menu, located at the top of thebookplace.org. This points to our new book alerts just like the old website, but the firstbooklook.com page has been updated to our new website design. So it’s safe to point patrons to that link to learn about new materials. I’m wondering if the link should be placed in a different location on the website. What do you think?

Great Jazz Titles Available

Did you know that you can checkout and download entire albums from the Boyd County Public Library online collection via OverDrive?!?! Well, you can. While doing a quick browse-through today I noticed some really nice titles in the Blues & Jazz genre. Here is a list of albums that jumped out on the first page:

These were all on the 1st page of the Blues & Jazz genre and there are 78 pages today. I know there are other ways to download free music, but I bet it will be hard to find many of the titles found in OverDrive. It is truly a great resource.

These albums are available for download to a PC, Mac, and iPod as well as other mediums as listed. If an album is currently checked out, you can be placed on the waiting list just like you would for a physical book or CD.

Free downloads of young adult books

A new service offered through BCPL lets teens another readers of young adult material “sync” that literature into their headphones – with two free audiobook downloads available each week all summer.

Now you can listen to bestselling young adult titles and those required reading classics. Two free audiobook downloads are offered each week, from June 14 through Aug. 22. Just go to www.AudiobookSync.com to download the titles so you can listen on the run.

Each week’s free audiobook pairings will include a popular YA title and a classic that connects with the YA title’s theme and is likely to show up on a student’s summer reading list. For example, Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone, the first book in a series about a girl who opens a door to two otherwordly cities at war, will be paired with Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities.

A free bookmark containing a complete listing of all the summer’s SYNC titles is available at any library branch. You can also find out more by going to www.AudiobookSync.com. You can also get title updates by texting synca to 25827.

Appy Hour

“We have two Appy Hour programs each month. Representatives from AT&T come and show people the newest apps for their iPhone or other device. People are encouraged to share their favorite apps with others, too. The Appy Hour for advanced users is on the first Tuesday at Main at 6 p.m. The one for beginners is at Kyova on the second Tuesday at 6 p.m.”
